Anxiety disorders have their own individual distinct features, however they all share a common theme of excessive, irrational fear and dread.
The most common types of anxiety disorders are:
- panic disorder,
- obsessive-compulsive disorder,
- post-traumatic stress disorder,
- phobias,
- generalized anxiety disorder
Panic Disorders
If you have a panic disorder, chances are you experience feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly without warning. Your heart will pound, you may feel sweaty, weak, faint, and / or dizzy. Your hands may tingle or feel numb, and you may feel flushed or chilled. You might experience nausea as well as chest pains or smothering sensations. Other common experiences are a very real sense of impending doom or that you're losing your mind, or that you're having a heart attack.
People with panic disorder can't predict when a panic "attack" will occur, and it's not unusual to develop intense anxiety between episodes, worrying when and where the next "attack" will strike. Episodes can occur at any time, even during sleep, and generally peak within 10-minutes, but some symptoms may last much longer.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Also referred to as OCD, this disorder involves anxious thougts or rituals that you feel you cannot contorl. If you have OCD, you may be
plagued by persistent, unwelcome thoughts or images, or by the urgent need to engage in certain rituals or repetitive behaviors.
Some common forms of OCD include being obsessed with germs or dirt, so you wash your hands over and over. You may be filled with doubt and feel the need to check things repeatedly. You can have frequent thoughts of violence, and fear that you will harm people close to you. You may spend long periods touching things or counting; you may be preoccupied by order or symmetry; you may have persistent thoughts of performing sexual acts that are repugnant to you; or you may be troubled by thoughts that are against your religious beliefs.
The disturbing thoughts or images are called obsessions, and the rituals that are performed to try to prevent or get rid of them are called compulsions. There is not pleasure in carrying out the ritual you are drawn to, only temporary relief from the anxiety that grows when you don't perform them.
OCD generally responds well to treatment with medications and / or carefully individualized psychotherapy
