Why Malibu Horizon Is Different From Other Programs

“Our addiction treatment program is based on a medical model, addressing addiction as a brain disease with both genetic (biological) and environmental (psycho-social) risk factors.

Dual Diagnosis

What you need to know
Simply stated, a dual diagnosis refers to people who exhibit addiction as well as one or more mental disorders or illnesses. These accompanying mental conditions are called co-occurring disorders. They can range from anything from post traumatic stress disorder to severe depression.

  • Approximately 60% of those with bipolar disorder also suffer from addiction
  • 25% of people with depression also are chemically dependent to drugs or alcohol
  • The majority (53%) of all substance abusers have at least one co-occurring disorder (dual diagnosis)

What are co-occurring disorders?
These are serious conditions, made more damaging by the fact that the person also struggles with a crippling physical and mental addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. Treating addiction but not a co-occurring mental disorder is just like taking medicine for the common cold: it may relieve some pain, but it will certainly never cure your illness. Co-occurring disorders include:

  • severe depression
  • anxiety
  • ADHD
  • PTSD,
  • bipolar disorder

Co-occurring disorders are incredibly important to treat because they may be the cause of your drug and alcohol abuse in the first place.

What does this mean?
Far from throwing in the towel, a dual diagnosis simply means you need a treatment plan with a different focus than that of tradition drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers. You need medical professionals with experience treating co-occurring disorders. If you treat the addiction, without analyzing the underlying cause of your addiction, you will inevitably drink and use again. Your new life is waiting for you.
