BIPOLAR DISORDER
People with bipolar disorder or illness can lead healthy and productive lives when it's treated effectively. However, without treatment the natural course of bipolar disorder can worsen, and a person may suffer more frequent and more severe episodes. Proper treatment can help reduce both the frequence and severity of episodes, and allow you to maintain an optimal quality of life.
Bipolar disorder or illness, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. Symptoms are severe and dramatically different than normal ups and downs that everyone goes through.
Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder can include:
- Increased energy, activity, and / or restlessness
- Excessively "high", overly good, euphoric mood
- Extreme irritability
- Racing thougths and talking very fast, jumping from one idea to another
- Distractibility, inability to concentrate, unrealistic beliefs in one's abilities and powers
- Little sleep needed, poor judgement, spending sprees, and lasting periods of behavior that are different from usual
Episodes of mania and depression typically recur over the course of a lifetime. Between episodes, most people with bipolar disorder are free from symptoms, however as many as one-third of people have some residual symptoms. A small percentage of people experience chronic unremitting symptoms despite treatment.
Forms of bipolar disorder
The classic form of bipolar illness, which involves recurrent experiences of mania and depression, is called bipolar I disorder.
Some people, however, never develop severe mania but instead experience milder episodes of hypomania that alternate with depression.
This is referred to as bipolar II disorder. When four or more episodes occur within a 12-month period, a person is said to have rapid-cycling bipolar disorder.
Treating bipolar disorder
Men and women with bipolar disorder or illness -- even those with the most severe forms -- can achieve substantial
stabilization of their mood swings and other related symptoms through proper treatment.
Since bipolar disorder is a recurring illness, we have found that long-term treatment almost always ensures a more fulfilling recovery. Our approach at Las Virgenes Behavioral Health and Medical Clinic combines both medication and psychological and / or psychosocial treatments in order to manage the disorder's symptoms.
Medication
Medications for bipolar disorder are prescribed by our psychiatrists, who are also medical doctors (MD) and
have more than XX years of expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of behavioral health disorders and illnesses.
Medications known as "mood stabilizers" are often prescribed to help in controlling the symptoms of bipolar disorder, and there are several effective medications available today. Generally, people continue taking these medications for extended periods of time if not for the rest of their lives. A common mistake is that people discontinue taking medications on their own when symptoms of bipolar disorder subside. They fail to realize or realize that the symptoms have subsided because of the medication. Other medications can also be added when required in order to treat episodes of mania or depression that can possible occur even in the presence of mood stabilizers.
Psychological / Psychosocial Treatment
In combination with medications, a variety of forms of psychotherapy are also helpful in providing support, education, and
guidance to people with bipolar disorder and their families. These therapies can lead to increased mood stability, fewer hospitalizations,
and improved functioning in several areas.
