Traditionally, drug addiction or abuse, and chemical dependency have been treated with behavioral, social, and environmental approaches. However, over the past several years evidence is mounting that supports and proves that addiction / dependence is a brain disease; a chronic relapsing disease of the brain. Consequently, we believe that it should be treated medically and psychosocially.

"The essence of addiction is the compulsive drug seeking and using inspite of negative moral, physical, and social consequences," says Dr. Mohammad. "Combine this with the fact that addiction is tied to changes in brain structure and function, and that's what makes addiction a brain disease."
"The ability of a drug to initiate the disease state is dependent upon genetic factors," he further explains, "as well as how a drug relates to the existing brain chemistry's balance or imbalance. Since addiction is the result of changes in the brain function and that means a major goal of treatment must be either to reverse or to compensate for those changes."

"We need to understand that there are two ways to address drug problems realistically. One is that addiction is a brain disease, and two is that treatment methods that are successful are the ones that change brain chemistry or correct the brain's chemistry's imbalance."
Our Chronic Medical Illness Model of treatment can best be described as a multi-dimensional approach to drug addiction treatment. Medically, the addiction or dependency is treated specifically to address withdrawals, urges, and cravings. Certain medications are also used to treat any co-occurring conditions such as clinical depression, bipolar disorder, etc. Simultaneously, maintenance of recovery and intensive relapse prevention techniques are complimented by psychosocial tools such as ongoing therapy (either group and / or individual) and / or 12-Step recovery participation.
